 Explosive Full Trailer Released for ‘Saipan’ – Film Chronicles Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy Clash



The highly anticipated full trailer for Saipan, the new film capturing the dramatic fallout between Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy during Ireland’s 2002 World Cup preparations, has been officially released.

Starring Éanna Hardwicke as Roy Keane and Steve Coogan as Mick McCarthy, the film delves into one of the most talked-about moments in Irish sporting history. The intense drama portrays the infamous clash that led to Keane being sent home, a controversy that divided public opinion across Ireland about who was at fault.



Described as “the definitive account of one of the most fractious fallings-out in the history of sport,” Saipan promises a gripping and entertaining look behind the scenes of Irish football’s most notorious episode.

Behind the Film

The movie is directed by Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn, known for Good Vibrations and Ordinary Love, from a script written by Paul Fraser (Heartlands, A Room for Romeo Brass).

Produced by Macdara Kelleher and John Keville for Wild Atlantic Pictures (Evil Dead Rise, Cocaine Bear, Black 47), along with Trevor Birney and Oliver Butler for Fine Point Films (Kneecap, Bobby Sands: 66 Days), the project also includes executive producers Patrick O'Neill, Eoin Egan, and Rachael O'Kane.

Made in association with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen, the film is set to hit Irish cinemas on 1 January 2026, giving fans an early start to the new year with this much-discussed sporting drama.
