Vance Flexes Marines’ Might Amid Nationwide Protests Against Trump Agenda

By deepoct | October 19, 2025

Southern California, U.S. – Vice President JD Vance oversaw a dramatic demonstration of military power on Saturday at Camp Pendleton, California, as Marines fired 155-millimeter artillery shells over a major freeway. Vance called the display a “testament to the corps’ strength and unbeatable power,” in a show that coincided with widespread protests against former President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda.

Protests Across the Country

While Vance showcased the Marines’ capabilities, thousands of Americans took to the streets in cities including Los Angeles and San Diego, criticizing Trump’s administration for what they called authoritarian consolidation of power. The protests highlighted growing tensions between federal officials aligned with Trump and Democratic leaders across the nation.

California Governor Gavin Newsom described the demonstration as an “absurd show of force” and dangerous, arguing that state officials had received little communication about the live-fire exercise.

“The values Americans cherish are under assault by Trump,” Newsom said on social media, pledging that California would continue “peacefully pushing back against the Trump Administration’s authoritarian takeover.”

Vance’s aides countered, insisting the exercise was routine and posed no threat. William Martin, Vance’s communications director, criticized the governor for his lack of knowledge about military operations at Camp Pendleton.

A Celebration or Political Statement?

Originally planned as part of celebrations for the country’s 250th birthday, the event featured:

  • Marines firing live artillery rounds

  • Parachutists descending from the sky

  • Navy SEALs swimming ashore

  • F-35 jets performing overhead

Vance, a former Marine Corps media relations officer who served in Iraq, praised the storied history of the Marines. But his remarks quickly turned political, attacking Democrats over the recent government shutdown, dubbing it the “Schumer shutdown” and portraying military personnel as victims of a progressive cultural agenda.

Disruptions and Compromises

California officials temporarily closed Interstate 5, the busy corridor connecting Los Angeles and San Diego, for several hours to ensure public safety. The exercise, initially planned to fire multiple rounds east over the freeway, was scaled back amid the dispute between federal and state authorities.

The overlapping events—military demonstration and nationwide protests—underscored the deepening divisions within the U.S., as federal officials aligned with Trump faced pushback from Democratic leaders at both state and local levels.

Looking Ahead

As political tensions rise, the intersection of military displays and domestic protests could set a new tone in the ongoing debate over the balance of federal power, state authority, and civil protest in the United States. Analysts suggest that future exercises and demonstrations may continue to generate both national attention and political controversy.
