After a frustrating goal drought, Viktor Gyokeres returned to form in style, scoring twice to help Arsenal secure a commanding 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. Manager Mikel Arteta hailed the striker’s contribution, saying his presence makes Arsenal a “much better team.”
Gyokeres, 27, started the season brightly with three goals in four matches but struggled to score in his next seven games, showing visible frustration. Despite this, teammates and Arteta consistently praised his overall impact on the pitch. Arteta even gave Gyokeres a hug after Arsenal’s 2-0 win over West Ham, acknowledging his hard work and persistence.
The striker’s increased workload came due to Kai Havertz’s knee injury, forcing Gyokeres to play seven full matches in Arsenal’s opening 12 fixtures. But his patience and dedication paid off against Atletico, where he showcased his clinical finishing and regained confidence. Gyokeres’ current tally now stands at five goals in 12 matches, signaling a potential return to his early-season form.
Arteta emphasized that Gyokeres’ value extends beyond goals. “He deserved it because everything that we were seeing in terms of what he was bringing to the team and how much he was helping the team in many areas…there was no debate about that,” he said. The manager added that scoring again would help Gyokeres enjoy playing freely and maintain belief in himself.
Arsenal’s squad celebrated alongside their striker, highlighting the camaraderie and shared belief in the team’s attacking options. With Gyokeres back on form, Arteta’s side looks even more dangerous in upcoming matches.
